Abstract
Spoonies is a tabletop role-playing game that utilizes GM-less mechanics and collaborative storytelling to explore how energy management plays a central role in the lives of those with disabilities. This project is inspired by Christine Miserandino’s 2003 article, “The Spoon Theory”, which uses spoons as an analogy to explain how those with disabilities or chronic illness must carefully ration energy throughout their daily lives. In the game, 2-6 players act as roommates working together to plan a party over the course of one or more in-game days. Players use spoons, tracked by a 20 sided dice, as a resource for completing daily tasks such as cleaning, socializing, and preparing for the party. Spoonies includes a custom deck of 52 printable cards and a game rule book that facilitates conversations around disability and allyship. The game emphasizes the need for community and conversation by implementing a dialogical framework where all players share equal responsibility for narrating the story rather than relying on a game master to interpret the success of actions. Beyond its function as a game, Spoonies serves as a tool for promoting empathy, dialogue, and understanding, and emphasizes the importance that everyone has a role to play in building a more inclusive and supportive society.
Spoonies is currently undergoing further play testing to bring forth the best experience possible. Player feedback is always appreciated via the contact page.
